  • Hewitt opponent a mystery to unravel

    1/18/10 2:38 AM | Johan Lindahl
Hewitt opponent a mystery to unravel Lleyton Hewitt's camp has been busy scratching for information on the mystery Brazilian opponent the former No. 1 will face in the opening round of the Australian Open.

There is only a sketchy missing persons report on world No. 192 Ricardo Hocevar, whose photograph, hometown, height and weight are absent from official data. Only known facts: aged 24.

The outsider couldn't ask for a tough debut at a major, playing the home hero as 2005 finalist Hewitt aims to avoid his first-round exit of a year ago.

Hocevar got through qualifying rounds and stand a modest 0-2 career in ATP-level matches. Hewitt left any possible scouting up to coach Nathan Healey. "Heals will probably have a look at some tape, find out as much as we can," said the Australian, ranked 22nd.

"I've spoken to a couple of people who have played him the past year or so. Qualifiers are always tough. Over five sets, I'll get a feel for him. For them, it's a bonus just to get into the tournament. So you can't take any of them lightly."

Australia is desperate for a home-grown champion, with Mark Edmondson the last Aussie titleholder in 1976.
