The ITF might be amenable to eventually signing the death warrant for Davis Cup, with the century-plus competition possibly replaced by a bi-annual, 32-nation World Cup with radical new wrinkles on court.
Plans have been floated after brainstorming at a Melbourne PR agency for the radical new event to find a place in the calendar - possibly at the expense of Davis Cup.
Surprisingly, the London-based ITF issued a non-negative opinion of the initiative which was also shown to Wimbledon and US Open officials, plus Tennis Australia, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.
"Davis Cup has seen many changes in the structure of tennis, some very significant like the move to professionalism in 1968 and the founding of the professional tours in the 1970s," read a statement.
"This proposal, also shown to the ITF, has some interesting elements and, of course, timely branding, given the current worldwide fascination with the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
"It also has many challenges that must be faced if it is to succeed."
Among innovations proposed under the nation vs. nation proposal: shorter matches with a 25-second limit between points, tiebreaks to five points, and mandatory player substitutions mid-way through the five-set matches.
