Andy Murray's punting support seems to be waning with just a few days to go before the start of the Australian Open.
Despite being short-listed as a potential favorite at the major which starts Monday, the Scot has swooned with the public. The world No. 5 has slid to 6-1 from 4-1. Roger Federer's bid for a fourth Melbourne title takes center stage as the Swiss starts an 11/4 favorite.
British bookmakers Ladbrokes also list Rafael Nadal at 3/1.
“The patriotic punt on the British ace has failed to materialize," said a spokesman. "As things stand, we could be in the unusual position of cheering him on as he takes to the court.”
Other men's odds include Juan Del Potro (9/2), 2008 winner Novak Djokovic (6/1), Nikolay Davydenko (8/1) and Brisbane winner Andy Roddick (20/1).

All these odds are a waste of time, maybe Andy is better not being tipped, because he's been tipped so many times and not won. It won't make the slightest bit of difference who has which odds.

Alex and Carrie -
I agree. They just never seem to get it right. Not only that, but I don't consider Federer the favorite to win either. His pre-tournament form certainly has not been as good as Nadal's or even Davydenko's.
I mean, the loss to Robredo certainly hasn't bolstered confidence - on the other hand, Muzz went into Oz with Abu Dhabi and Doha in his back pocket. And Andy got the flu and lost.

Yes its all a load of codswhollop! there are so many good players at the moment on the mens tour and Australia always brings about surprises, the odds are irrelevant until the tournament gets through the first 3=4 rounds and we get to view who is most ominous to take the title.

i wouldn't pay the slightest bit of attention to the odds this year. there hasn't been as much hype. in fact, the only news we've got in the uk at the moment is that it's snowing. which could be why his odds aren't very good. people can't actually get to the bookies to place a bet. it's not worth leaving the house for at the moment

well, they made their wealth on the hype created around Andy. now it's time to go quiet. they'll come back strong again, collective memory is short.

cheryl, did Andy get the flu in Australia, I thought it was in Dubai?
carrie , 1/13/10 8:24 PM
Sorry cheryl, you are right. He also pulled out of Dubai due to illness.

I dont think Fed will win but need to see the first few rounds.
Last year at AO I saw Nadal and Rafa play a few rounds and knew Rafa will win.

If support from the punters were reliable, muzz would have won the Oz Open last year. Say no more :)
