Philpp Kohlschreiber makes quick work of Thomaz Bellucci on Wednesday afternoon in Auckland. Michael Lammer also advances when Juan Carlos Ferrero is forced to retire with an ankle injury.
(5) Philipp Kohlschreiber d. Thomaz Bellucci 6-4, 6-1
Kohlschreiber needed just one hour and 21 minutes to get past Bellucci and book a spot in the quarterfinals of the Heineken Open on Wednesday. Bellucci managed to stay close early, but his struggles on serve eventually cost him in a first set that featured a total of five breaks. After exchanging two breaks apiece, the 34th-ranked Brazilian failed stay in the set while serving at 4-5. Bellucci won a mere two of 12 second-serve points throughout the opening frame of play.
With momentum in hand, Kohlschreiber continued to dominate in the return game while also improving his own serve. The German saved the only beak point he faced in the second set, so two more breaks were easily enough to finish off the match in straights. Kohlschreiber wrapped up his effort by winning an impressive 14 of 18 points at the expense of Bellucci's second serve. Brisbane's No. 5 seed, who struck one ace against three double-faults, will look to pick up his serving in the next round. His quarterfinal opponent is Marc Gicquel, who crushed No. 4 seed Nicolas Almagro 6-0, 6-3.
(Q) Michael Lammer d. (3) Juan Carlos Ferrero 3-1, retired
Lammer got a virtual free pass to the Auckland quarterfinals when Ferrero called it quits early in the first set. After four games and 25 minutes of play, a right ankle injury sustained on the first point of the fifth game forced the No. 3 seed to retire in his opening match of the 2010 season. Lammer, who broke serve for an immediate 2-0 lead, had won eight of nine first-serve points when it ended. After the 209th-ranked Swiss fired an ace at 3-1, 15-15, Ferrero could not continue.
"It's unfortunate," Lammer explained. "I really enjoyed myself and had nothing to lose. Hopefully he can play in Melbourne." Next up for Lammer is another seeded Spaniard, this time No. 8 Albert Montanes. Montanes dismissed wild card Jose Rubin Statham of New Zealand in straight sets on Wednesday.
