The Australian Open is just one week away, and players will be making their final preparations in Auckland and Sydney. At Auckland's Heineken Open, a host of clay-courters will be looking for hard-court success.
Spaniards Tommy Robredo, David Ferrer, and Juan Carlos Ferrero will lead the way at this week's Heineken Open in Auckland. All three players generally do their best work on clay, but with the Australian Open just seven days away, they are set to put in some hard-court work prior to the first Grand Slam of 2010.
And that will the theme of the week in Auckland, as clay-court specialists dominate this draw left and right. Also taking part in the event are Nicolas Almagro, Juan Monaco, Albert Montanes, Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, Horacio Zeballos, and Thomaz Bellucci.
Perhaps most notably, the Heineken Open features the return of David Nalbandian, who missed most of 2009 following hip surgery. Nalbandian, a former world No. 3 who now registers at 64th in the ATP rankings, will open his Auckland campaign against fifth-seeded Philipp Kohlschreiber.
In addition to Nalbandian, other dangerous unseeded threats include Bellucci, Jeremy Chardy, John Isner, and Marco Chiudinelli. Bellucci and Chiudinelli have to face each other in the opening round, while Isner will go up against Garcia-Lopez and Monaco will take on Zeballos.
If the seeds hold true to form all the way to the semifinals, the top-seeded Robredo would meet Ferrero and Ferrer would battle Almagro in the other semifinal. Following his first-round bye as one of the top four seeds, however, Ferrer will open with a tough contest against Chardy if Chardy can get past fellow Frenchman Arnaud Clement.
Picks: Ferrero over Robredo, Ferrer over Nalbandian, Ferrer over Ferrero

If Argentina had a king, it would be del Potro not Nalbandian.

Nalbandian is as talented as any player, including Fed, just seems to lack dedication. I think he prefers fast cars to tennis matches!
