The American Davis Cup team seems set for a major change after a decade of stability, with key players Andy Roddick and James Blake reportedly both opting out of the March 5-7 tie away in Serbia.
Belgrade is not on the travel agenda for either of the pair, with Serbia led by Novak Djokovic now nearly assured of victory into the quarter-finals. Tennis.com made the revelation, saying that the pair of stalwarts have left the Davis Cup event off of their 2010 schedules.
“It certainly appears to be the end of era,” US Davis Cup captain Patrick McEnroe told the American website. "But the door will always remain open to both of those guys in the event they decide they want to play again.”
McEnroe will have to call on back-up players including Sam Querrry and John Isner to try and get the job done in hostile surroundings on indoor clay less than a fortnight after the end of this month's Australian Open.
Also in the wings: occasional Davis player Mardy Fish.
Roddick and Blake first played Davis Cup in 2001, with one or both represented in the last 25 ties. Roddick has joined Roger Federer and Andy Murray in announcing he would skip a first-round tie. The decision of Rafael Nadal for the Spain-Swiss match-up is yet to be announced.
