Andy Roddick is through to the Brisbane semifinals after dispatching Richard Gasquet on Friday night. Roddick will take on Tomas Berdych for a spot in the title match.
Andy Roddick put on a ruthless serving display in a 6-3, 7-6(5) victory over Richard Gasquet in the quarterfinals of the Brisbane International on Friday night. Roddick needed one hour and 24 minutes to book a place in the last four of his first tournament back from a fall 2009 knee injury.
If Roddick showed only little rust in his first two matches of the week (wins over Peter Luczak and Carsten Ball), he seemed to be in perfect shape against Gasquet. Brisbane's No. 1 seed fired five aces and one double-fault in the first set while losing a mere four points in five service games. As a result, one break was easily enough for Roddick to cruise through the opening frame of play.
The seventh-ranked American was even more devastating on serve in set two, blasting 11 aces without double-faulting and putting in an incredible 83 percent of his first serves. Gasquet, however, raised his own level and stayed on serve by winning 18 of 21 points in which he made his first delivery. A tiebreaker ensued, ending appropriately in that Roddick's serve proved to be the ultimate difference. Roddick took it seven points to five to cap off an impressive display in style.
"I wanted to come here and play well, get better with each match and get matches in," the former world No. 1 explained. "The goal is to be prepared for Melbourne and I feel like that has been accomplished for the most part."
"He served unbelievable," Gasquet noted. "I had to earn every point from him. I played my game, but not with service. I think I could have served better, because compared to his serve it is not the same for sure."
Roddick's final stats were daunting: 16 aces, one double-fault, 75 percent of his first serves in play, 87 percent first-serve points won, 67 percent second-serve points won.
Tomas Berdych is next in line to face Roddick's firepower. The fourth-seeded Czech outlasted Thomaz Bellucci 7-6(4), 2-6, 7-6(3) in two hours and 42 minutes on Friday afternoon.
