Stanislas Wawrinka and Dudi Sela earn straight-set victories in the second round of the Chennai Open on Thursday. Robby Ginepri, however, fails to capitalize on his opening win over Robin Soderling.
(3) Stanislas Wawrinka d. Michael Russell 6-3, 6-4
Wawrinka got past Russell in one hour and 31 minutes to reach the Chennai quarterfinals on Thursday afternoon. The third-seeded Swiss started off in fine form whereas Russell, a considerable underdog, came out flat. Wawrinka faced no break points in the first set and capitalized on dismal 41 percent serving by his opponent to seize one break, which was enough for him to take the opening frame of play. The second was more competitive, as Russell raced to a 3-1 advantage. The veteran American, however, could not sustain the lead and Wawrinka eventually regained control. Two breaks allowed the favorite to serve out the match at 5-4, which he did in routine fashion. Next up for Wawrinka isNo. 7 seed Michael Berrer.
(5) Dudi Sela d. Kevin Kim 7-6(2), 6-2
Sela avenged a first-round loss to Kim at the 2009 U.S. Open by dismissing the American in one hour and 38 minutes on Thursday. Kim managed to stay close throughout an entertaining first set in which both players saved all three of the break points they faced. After Sela took control of the tiebreaker, however, it was all over. The fifth-seeded Israeli began to dominate Kim's second serve and he consistently dictated play from the back of the court with his one-handed backhand. Two breaks were more than enough for Sela to set up a quarterfinal clash with unseeded Lukas Lacko.
Lukas Lacko d. Robby Ginepri 7-6(3), 6-4
Ginepri stunned No. 1 seed Robin Soderling in the Chennai first round, but he could not come up with the same stuff against a little-known opponent in Lacko. The American forced an opening tiebreaker despite serving at just 46 percent in the first set, but he went away quietly in the decider seven points to three. Ginepri showed signs of bouncing back by earning the match's initial break for a 2-1 lead in the second, but he fell apart from there. Lacko fired eight aces and no double-faults in the second set and won an impressive 48 percent of the points even when his opponented connected on a first serve. The Slovak finished with 11 aces and one double-fault on his way to a surprising quarterfinal berth.

I checked up on Lukas Lacko of Slovakia: He came from 318 in '08 to 82 now. That's a pretty stellar year. This is his first ATP QF, so good for him - he's only 22.
