Last weekend's unofficial title in Abu Dhabi has breathed fresh confidence into Rafael Nadal, a player who keeps insisting that returning to the No. 1 ranking is not a part of his immediate plans this 2010 season.
Nadal and top-ranked Roger Federer are starting on the ATP this week in Doha before flying to Australia with a week to go before the January 18 start of the Australian Open.
"My only ambition is to play better," said the Spaniard who suffered from a run of stomach muscle and knee injuries, problems which compromised his past campaign and forced him to miss his Wimbledon title defence.
The four-time French Open winner who lost at Roland Garros for the first time ever last May against Robin Soderling, is concentrating on staying fit.
"Ranking-wise, No. 1 or No. 2 doesn't matter," said Nadal, who called himself 100 percent fit.
"I'm hitting the ball harder. I'm happy that I officially started the season on a winning note and I hope to sustain the momentum."

I hope he keeps it up, there are a lot of players whose ambition is to beat Rafa, so they really pull the stops out when they play him. Verdasco said that his aim for 2009 was to beat Rafa, he came close but didn't manage it. I hope it stays that way.
