  • Ginepri stuns No. 1 seed Soderling

Ginepri stuns No. 1 seed Soderling Robby Ginepri upsets Robin Soderling in the first round of the Chennai Open on Tuesday afternoon. Also advancing were Stanislas Wawrinka and 2009 runner-up Somdev Devvarman.

    Robby Ginepri d. Robin Soderling 6-4, 7-5

Soderling enjoyed a breakout 2009 campaign while Ginepri slumped throughout the season, but none of that mattered on Tuesday in the first round of the Chennai Open. Ranked 100th in the world, Ginepri toppled the No. 1 seed in straight sets after one hour and 31 minutes. Soderling had defeated Roger Federer in the Capitala World Tennis Championship last week, but he could not find the same form against Ginepri. The world No. 8 double-faulted five times and won a dismal 38 percent of his second-serve points. One break was enough for Ginepri to take the first set, and--after exchanging breaks early in the second--the underdog American got the best of his opponent's serve late at 6-5 to seal the victory.

    (3) Stanislas Wawrinka d. Rohan Bopanna 6-1, 6-4

Ranked 391st in the world, Bopanna got a wild card into Chennai but could not make the most of it as he faced a difficult first-round test in Wawrinka. The 21st-ranked Swiss jumped on Bopanna early and cruised into the second round after just 50 minutes of play. Wawrinka never faced a single break point and he won 22 of 26 first-serve points. Clearly overmatched from the baseline, Bopanna saw his chances doomed by serving only one ace against four double-faults.

(WC) Somdev Devvarman d. Rainer Schuettler 7-5, 6-2

Having reached last year's Chennai title match (lost to Marin Cilic), Devvarman thrilled the Indian fans once again on Tuesday by storming back from a lackluster start. The world No. 126 fell behind 5-2 in the first set only to win the next five games, breaking Schuettler at 3-5 and 5-5 before holding easily for the set. With momentum in hand, Devvarman seized an immediate break in the second frame of play and never looked back. Wresting control of the match from the 33-year-old German, Devvarman faced no break points throughout set two. Next up for the crowd favorite is No. 4 seed Janko Tipsarevic.
