The curse of the French Open seems to have struck another Argentine, with 2005 finalist Mariano Puerta forced to declare bankruptcy in his native land.
Puerta's fate is as bad in its own way as the fall from grace of compatriots Gaston Gaudio, the 2004 winners, and losing finalist at that edition, Guillermo Coria, both of whom have faded form the competitive scene.
Puerta, 31, survived two doping bans from the ATP after testing positive for the use of banned substances. He hit his peak as ninth in the world in the summer five years ago.
His financial position was not helped by being forced to re-pay $800,000 in prize money as a result of his sanctions from the game.
The 2005 Roland Garros finals loser to Rafael Nadal eventually served a two-year-ban and last played at survival level on the Challenger and Futures circuit. The current No. 312 and earned just over $20,000 in 2009.
