Roger Federer and familiar foe Robin Soderling will do battle in the first semifinal at the Capitala World Tennis Championship on Friday. The winner will take on either Rafael Nadal or David Ferrer.
Robin Soderling will get yet another shot at Roger Federer. Unfortunately for Soderling, it won't go down in the history books as his first win over Federer even if he prevails.
Soderling and Federer will square off in the semifinals of the Capitala World Tennis Championship exhibition on New Year's Day in Abu Dhabi. They have met--officially--on 12 previous occasions, and Federer has won them all. The top-ranked Swiss earned four victories over Soderling last season, including at the French Open (final), Wimbledon (fourth round), and the U.S. Open (quarterfinals).
Federer, who received an opening-round bye this week along with Rafael Nadal, is 6-0 lifetime against Soderling on hard courts.
Soderling, however, ended 2009 in fine form and is eager for another crack at Federer. "Last year was great but I'm focusing on the New Year now," said the eighth-ranked Swede, who reached the semifinals of the year-end championships in London in addition to his stellar showings at the Grand Slams. "It's always great to play Roger and I'm looking forward to it.I learn something every time I play him but hopefully this time I can finally win one."
Soderling beat Stanislas Wawrinka in two tiebreakers on Thursday after serving for the first set at 5-1 and 5-3 and serving for the second set at 5-4.
Nadal will face Ferrer in Friday's second semifinal. Ferrer, who was a last-minute replacement for Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, upset Nikolay Davydenko 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 in his Abu Dhabi opener.

Fed rarely starts well nowadays. Possible Fed might lose this one because Sod played yesterday

Well done by the Sod. I guess nobody beats the Sod 13 times in a row even if it's unofficial. He's on the upswing still. Looking forward to another match against Nadal but was hoping for Fed/Nadal. Fed knows by now he has to raise his game going into the AO. Hopefully this loss can motivate him.

One more player who can win over ExFed.
Common people...I can imagine... he was not motivated...he played with his Rolex...
it's nothing for him... he is saving his strenght for AO...etc, etc
As we said in my country: "You can judge the day by morning"
Sod is taking this no matter is he playing against Rafa or Ferrer in finale...

was a very interesting match.well done to the soderling.He kept with roger all the way in the first set and did really well again in second.I also love the fact that roger plays shots he wouldnt normally in a grand slam, to try them out.As he did in the third set, serve and volley on second serves.He'll take this loss and learn from it,like he always does.I enjoyed the match.
good luck to the rafa fans today against ferrer.

Thanks deuce, I'm a big Fed fan. But I had a feel that he will lose. Dunno why. I think Murray's 1st Slam will be in Wimby but I dunno what year will it be. LOL
