  • Federer, Nadal set to kick things off in Abu Dhabi

    12/30/09 8:00 AM | Ricky Dimon
Federer, Nadal set to kick things off in Abu Dhabi The 2010 tennis season won't have to wait long to get started. In fact, both Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal will be in action right away on New Year's Day in the semifinals of Abu Dhabi's Capitala World Tennis Championship.

The brief offseason does not officially end until Monday, but a prestigious exhibition event will bring an end to the tennis lull on Thursday. That's when the Capitala World Tennis Championship, featuring a stellar six-man field, gets underway in Abu Dhabi.

Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal have free passes into Friday's semifinals, while Robin Soderling, Stanislas Wawrinka, Nikolay Davydenko, and David Ferrer will contest opening matches on Thursday. Ferrer was a late replacement for Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, who came up with an undisclosed injury during a recent practice and has been advised by his coach to rest prior to the Australian Open.

"It’s great to have the opportunity to play in Abu Dhabi and I am very much looking forward to getting the season underway and joining some of the best players in the world for this tournament," said Ferrer.

"I am extremely disappointed not to be able to participate due to an injury," Tsonga lamented. "I hope that I will come to participate in years to come but in the meantime I wish everyone there a good event and best wishes for 2010."

Ferrer will open against Davydenko, with the winner to face Nadal in the second match on Friday. The first semifinal could feature an all-Swiss affair between Federer and Wawrinka, but Wawrinka would have to get past Soderling in Thursday’s nightcap.

Federer and Nadal also received byes in last year’s installment of the Capitala World Tennis Championship. Nadal made his way to the final by dismissing Davydenko, but Federer fell to Murray in straight sets. Murray went on to beat Nadal in three sets for the title.

World number two Rafael Nadal believes he is in better shape for the start of the 2010 tennis season than he was this year despite having a relatively short time to prepare.

Nadal, who was plagued by knee and stomach injuries during 2009, helped Spain to a crushing victory over Czech Republic in this month?s Davis Cup final and has had only three weeks to train for the new season.

?My preparation has been short but good and three weeks later I am ready to start again,? Nadal said in an interview published in Wednesday?s As sports daily.

?I believe that this year (season) I?ll arrive in a bit better shape than at the start of last season.? Nadal completed his preparations for 2010 on Tuesday with a two-hour training session and a set against Mallorcan compatriot Carlos Moya, which he won 7-5, and flew to Abu Dhabi where he will take part in an exhibition event.

After competing in the Qatar Open at the beginning of next month, he will seek to defend his Australian Open title in Melbourne.

He said he was especially looking forward to the challenge of recapturing his French Open title in June after his four-year reign as champion was ended in last year?s fourth round by Swede Robin Soderling.

?The results will be what they are but right now my hope is to win everything,? he told As.

?Because that?s impossible you have to try to do what is possible in each tournament.

?If you have reached the semi-finals of almost every tournament without playing well, which is what happened to me (last season), when you are feeling better and maintaining a rhythm sooner or later your luck will change.?

Nice article, vrael. Good to hear Nadal being optimistic again. He sounded resigned in London.

cherylmurray , 12/30/09 4:04 PM

yeah......"The results will be what they are but right now my hope is to win everything"....that certainly is positive if not audacious......lets see.....first part of the year is the dangerous part....he has tons of points to defend,if he manages to hold on to his no. 2 in that duration...he will be well poised to regain numero uno around may, june, july where he has tons of points to gain.....

PRAY MY DEAR RAFANS

vamos!!!!!!

vrael , 12/30/09 4:33 PM

Just love Rafa, this sounds optimistic, pray for him I will and yes Vamos indeed!!!

"The results will be what they are but right now my hope is to win everything" .... imagine if Fed said that ....im sure he would be pummeled to the ground by many here ..anyways ....enough time has past by with just talk from everyone ...let the games begins ...

Federites ...UNITE !

C'MON !!

fedexfan , 12/31/09 4:57 AM

yep, I was about to paste the "right now my hope is to win everything" quote

RickyDimon , 12/31/09 5:04 AM

Errr... whats wrong with the quote?

Ezorra , 12/31/09 5:53 AM

i think nothing wrong with what he said i just hope that Rafa fans feels the same when Roger says the same words because when he says anything they dont know how to quite nagging champions do want the best and that is norml it is so tempting to use this chance against Rafa's fans but am just going to hold back i guess being fan for the king for so long made me apperciate champions more and Rafa is one maybe someday Rafa fans will know what i mean!

he is next oponent happens to be spanish!

tennislover , 12/31/09 3:09 PM

Rafa says he HOPES is to win everything - it's just a hope. I think what he is trying to say is that when he came back after his injury time out, he was not at at level to aspire to win everything, but now he is. I read it as just an aspiration.

Let's face it, all the players want to win everything, it's no use going on court if you don't hope to win.

Vamos Rafa!
