Exhibition events have been plentiful throughout this offseason. Among those who have picked up victories and have surely gained confidence heading into 2010 is injury-plagued David Nalbandian.
Exhibition results worth noting in the 2009 offseason:
Copa Argentina - David Nalbandian advanced out of round-robin play after beating Carlos Moya and losing to Gaston Gaudio. Moya beat Gaudio to eliminate the 2004 French Open champion based on percentage of sets won. Marcos Baghdatis also advanced by defeating Juan Monaco and Fernando Gonzalez. Nalbandian beat Baghdatis 6-4, 6-4 in the title match.
Copa San Juan Minero - Nalbandian, who missed most of 2009 due to hip surgery, hammered both Gaudio (6-2, 6-2) and Nicolas Massu (6-2, 6-1) to take the title.
Israeli National Championships - Dudi Sela did not lose a single set in four matches on his way to the title. Sela eased past Noam Okun in the semifinals before dismissing Amir Weintraub 6-3, 7-5.
Bilbao Masters - Juan Carlos Ferrero beat Tommy Robredo 7-6, 3-6, 6-2 in the semifinals while Almagro dispatched David Ferrer 7-5, 7-5. Ferrero then outlasted Almagro 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 in the final.
French Masters - Julien Benneteau beat Arnaud Clement in straight sets to finish on top. Benneteau eased into the final out of his round-robin group, while Clement beat Thierry Ascione 6-4, 6-4 to book his spot in the title match.
Dutch Masters - Robin Haase, who missed almost two full years with wrist problems, went undefeated en route to the championship. Haase took out Jesse Huta Galung in the semis and defeated Antal van der Duim in the final.
Juan Martin Del Potro vs. Fernando Gonzalez - Del Potro and Gonzalez faced each other twice during the offseason. Del Potro won their first encounter 6-4, 6-4 in Argentina, but Gonzalez had home-court advantage next time around in Santiago, Chile and got revenge 6-4, 7-5.
