Spain's new turnaround artist, David Ferrer, has credited a trip to the locker room at mid-match for helping him recover for the five-set victory which put Spain into 2-0 winning position over the Czech Republic in the Davis Cup final.
Ferrer, ranked 18th and off court for a month, worked a minor miracle with his comeback from two sets to love down over Radek Stepanek. His 1-6, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4, 8-6 success in four and a quarter hours leaves the defending champion nation one point away from a fourth title at the event this decade.
"The end of the third set really convinced me that could reverse history," said Ferrer, who substituted for Fernando Verdasco in a late switch by captain Albert Costa. "This was one of the most important wins of my career."
Earlier, Rafael Nadal ran off 13 straight to rout of Tomas Berdych 7-5, 6-0, 6-2, thrashing him in front of 16,000 fans at the Palau Sant Jordi to stand 11-0 on Davis Cup clay.
"Tomorrow we have the first chance to win the Davis Cup and the Sunday will have two more," said Costa. "We know we are on the right track but the last thing we can do is relax."
Nadal was thrilled to get a victory after losing his last four matches - including three group contests at last week‘s ATP season wrapup in London.
"This win was very important to me. I had said that I wanted to be part of the team after missing the last two ties. Luckily I was able to give us and the crowd the first point," said Nadal.
"There were nerves at first, but I was able to concentrate in time and I won the match in a good way."
