Ivan Lendl might be on hand to witness history this weekend at the Davis Cup final as the Czech Republic plays for the worldwide title for the first time since his own success in 1980.
The best Czech to ever play the game has hinted that he might make the trip to Barcelona for the demanding weekend tie against defending champ Spain.
"My plan is to come to Barcelona," the eight-time Grand Slam champion said. "Occasionally, I work with Petr Korda, my friend and neighbor in Florida, in development of his daughter Jessica in golf.
She is in top 25 in golf, but Korda dislikes golf."
Lendl stepped totally away form tennis when he retired nearly two decades and has raised five daughters, some of them heavily involved in golf.
Lendl's remaining connection to tennis is through 1998 Australian Open winner Korda, who advises Czech No. 1 Radek Stepanek. Lendl led then-Czechoslovakia to its only Davis Cup title in 1980 over Italy in Prague. "It was very sweet for us, because we lost to Italians in a final a year before," the 49-year-old recalled.
But he remains realistic about his Czech chances: "With Rafael Nadal and the Barcelona crowd and a clay court, Spain are closer to victory. I know that the Czechs will not surrender. They will force Spaniard to work very hard for win."
