Spain’s David Ferrer secured the No. 2 singles spot over higher-ranked countryman Fernando Verdasco as Spain takes on the Czech Republic in Barcelona.
David Ferrer’s prowess on red clay presumably won him the controversial second spot on Spain’s Davis Cup squad. Ferrer is ranked 18th in the world – compatriot Fernando Verdasco sits at No. 9, but team captain Albert Costa favored Ferrer’s game on slow red clay.
Surface will give Ferrer a necessary advantage over opponent Radek Stepanek. The two men have played on six previous occasions and split the wins at 3 each. Ferrer won their last meeting on the dirt in a five-set barn-stormer of a match at Roland Garros.
Expect Friday’s second singles match to offer some fireworks. Stepanek, though he plays aggressive tennis, is no slouch on clay. The Czech knows how to construct a point and he should be able to weather most of Ferrer’s retrieving. The good news for the Spaniard is that the speed of the court will give him plenty of time to track down balls.
Prediction – Ferrer to eke out a win in five grueling sets.

Great match, indeed! And an A+ for Ricky's predictions! I enjoyed watching the match, but it was also such a pleasure to see how Rafa and others support Ferrer! It was so emotional and tense, I loved it! I just congratulate Spaniards on these heart wining victories...two down one more to go!!!! Vamolos!!!!!

Ricky did NOT make that prediction. I did. :(
:D and yes, it was a fantastic match.

Cheryl, the prediction was spot on! 5 grueling sets indeed. we have to applaud the tenacity of Ferrer to come from 2 sets down. Costa's decision to play him ahead of verdasco paid rich dividends

cheryl - natashao was referring to my blog (Nadal in 3, Ferrer in 5)

Yeah, I did refer to Ricky?s blog, sorry about it, I posted it here since I happened to be very excited about the outcome of the match! But I do give credit to Cheryl as well. Great predictions and great thinking! I am impressed! I was so passionate about this DC final, especially in the situation when under impression that Czechs felt little superior due to the fact that Rafa wasn?t performing well lately...I was scared to death of the first match and whether Rafa would be mentally challenged, but you guys reassured me and my friends, tennis lovers, and gave us great comfort with your positive thinking! Thanks! It is wonderful that you were so right about it! Keep up a great work!

Congrats to the Spanish team for the two match wins. So glad for Ferrer that he comes back from two sets down to win the match, and what a relief for Albert Costa, that his choice of Ferrer is proven to be a right decision.
