  • Federer plays by the complex ATP rules in London

Federer plays by the complex ATP rules in London For all-business Roger Federer, there are no regrets about the complex rules which eventually allowed him and Juan Martin Del Potro into the semifinals of the ATP World Tour Finals by the thinnest of margins.

The final decision came down to winning game percentage in the group, with Andy Murray left out by a hair from Saturday's final four.

"There are certain rules and these are the rules, sometimes unfortunate, sometimes fortunate," said the Swiss world No. 1. "These times are very hard for Murray, who didn't get through. But he got so close."

Federer allowed himself some amazement at how close it all really was.

"How can we imagine that we all play three sets and it comes down to a couple of games. I definitely tried to push myself to close out matches as quickly as I can against fellow rivals because you never know when you might need those games.

"They might come back in the match and turn the match around completely.

"It happened to me once this year against (Jo-Wilfried) Tsonga (in Montreal). I was up 5-1 in the third and I ended up losing. You always have to push yourself. The system is the way it is."
