  • Aussie Newk says he has sympathy for Agassi

    11/17/09 1:42 PM | Johan Lindahl
Aussie Newk says he has sympathy for Agassi Andre Agassi may get some love amid all the criticism over drug-taking and tanking revelations in his autobiography, with former Australian great John Newcombe considering penning a note of support to his fellow Grand Slam champion.

"I've actually been thinking about writing him a letter," Newcombe old Australian media. "Just a little show of support because there are a lot of people criticizing him ... and I'm not sure they have got the facts right."

Many players including Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Marat Safin have expressed shock at the Agassi confessions in his $30 book. But few have come out in support. "That's just stupid," Newk said of Safin's comments. "I think that was a bit of Marat tongue-in-cheek."

The Australian said that Agassi's weaknesses were personal and not connected with his tennis.
"The weaknesses revealed are not anti-tennis, they are human frailties, the story of living with that sort of pressure.

"I'm 100 percent against drugs but (depressed) people do some desperate things... I've got complete sympathy. I didn't understand when some of the top players and former top players came out and criticized him (for taking crystal meth).

"It was not performance enhancing. In fact, it was the opposite."

Newk is the man!

I find John Newcombe's "Crikey! Look at me I'm going to send a letter of support to Agassi!" kind of obnoxious.

I mean, if you want to support the man in a written letter to him then that's great, but why do you have to parade that fact around like you want a Rookie Cookie or something? It takes what would've been a genuine and thoughtful act and turns it into a cry for attention and applause.

Plus, if he thinks that Rafa and Roger have "come down hard" on Agassi or have "criticized" him, then he's wrong. They expressed surprise, but what's more important (this especially applies to Rafa) they didn't attack the man, they attacked the ISSUE. There's a BIG difference.

I see that he's echoing what Agassi basically said in his 60 Minutes interview about it not being performance enhancing. But really, does it really matter? The fact is he cheated, he lied about it, he go away with it and he admits it all himself. I think it's pointless trying to defend his actions. He confessed! Agassi is no longer the issue. The fact that the ATP let him off the hook is the real issue and how WADA is treating the athletes now is the real issue.

Newk is somewhat late to the party and so it seems that he's dancing to the wrong tune.

I kind of like his 'stache though.

BTW, Homos, I completely agree. Safin's reaction was priceless, honest and makes complete sense. Though I tend to favor Rafa's comments as they attack the heart of the problem and stands behind the right issues.

mini, how can you not support anything that comes out of safin's mouth?! :P

Mini - exactly, I think Newk missed the point here. My interpretation of Safin's comment was "if he really wants to make amends, he can return the titles he won after 1997. Otherwise, shut up about it." Like Marat, I don't understand why Agassi admitted to using crystal meth so many years after the fact. He certainly can't need the extra money, so is it all about publicity? I thought the extracts about his father were v. interesting though, it explains a lot about Andre's initial ambivalence towards tennis IMO. I think Rafa was concerned about the consequences of Agassi's meth admission for current players, and rightly so. Would Malisse and Wickmayer have been treated so harshly before his revaltions? Possibly not.
