  • Del Potro joins Kooyong field as Baghdatis chooses to exit

    11/12/09 1:17 PM | Johan Lindahl
Del Potro joins Kooyong field as Baghdatis chooses to exit While the Kooyong Classic awaits word as to whether Roger Federer will return to the event for his final pre-Australian Open touch-up preparation, Marcos Baghdatis has replaced with US Open winner Juan Martin Del Potro at the exhibition.

Former Australian Open finalist Marcos Baghdatis withdrew in order to play the Sydney ATP event that week and start rebuilding his ranking.

"It is most unfortunate to lose Marcos from an already announced field, but I understand his situation," said Kooyong boss Colin Stubs. "This event was instigated to provide the world's top players with the best possible preparation for the Australian Open, but it will not always suit."

Heading the confirmed entry are 2008 Open champion Novak Djokovic, his 2008 finalist opponent Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Spain's Fernando Verdasco, longtime participant Fernando Gonzalez, Swede Robin Söderling and Germany's Tommy Haas.

There is a spot in the field waiting for Federer once he makes his program known.
