Former Paris Masters champion Tomas Berdych moved into the second round with a straight-set victory over qualifier Vincent Millot.
Tomas Berdych def. Vincent Millot 6-3, 7-6(4)
The Czech Republic’s Tomas Berdych defeated French qualifier Vincent Millot in a tougher-than-expected first-round match. The first set was business as usual for Berdych, as the Czech did not face any break points and he converted one of two on Millot’s serve.
The second set was sloppy from both men. Berdych’s first-serve percentage dipped to 48% to match Millot’s 47%. As a result of the poor serving, there was a run of four service breaks. Each man pocketed two breaks to force the second-set tiebreak. Berdych, being the more experienced of the two players, held his nerve in the tiebreak for the straight-set win.
Ivo Karlovic def. Pablo Cuevas 7-6(3), 6-4
As with most Ivo Karlovic matches, this first-round encounter resulted in an opening tiebreaker. The reason is because the Croat stands at 6 feet 10 inches tall and his serves are nearly impossible to return. In addition, his return of serve is on the weak side; as a result, his matches are often decided in 'breakers.
Cuevas was able to fight off all four break points against him in the opening set – Karlovic, as expected, did not face any break points. Because the Croat had the advantage on serve, he was able to snag the tiebreak. Cuevas got a bit more sloppy in the second set. He surrendered a single break of serve, but he did not have any looks on Karlovic’s serve to give Karlovic the win.
