Marat Safin says Andre Agassi can ease his troubled mind over his guilt at taking drugs and tanking a match more than a decade ago with a simple plan - give back his millions in prize money.
The soon-to-retire Russian made the suggestion at the Paris Masters after a win in the first round which extended his career by one more match,
Safin is done with tennis after his exit at Bercy, where he owns three titles.
"He feels guilty? So let him just give back his titles, money, his Grand Slams!," Safin told the French sports daily L'Equipe. "If he is so fair play, he should go all the way. The ATP has a bank account, he can refund if he wants to."
Safin is also wondering why Agassi chose to bare all in his new autobiography which detailed his use of crystal meth in 1997, his lying in a letter to the ATP to escape punishment and also revealed that he tanked a 1996 Australian Open match so as not to play Boris Becker in a final.
But the colorful Safin says a tell-all book is definitely not a part of his post-tennis plans. "I won't write an biography, I don't need any money. The question is: why did he do it? What's done is done, he hopes to sell more books. But he is completely stupid!
"The ATP kept his secret so why be so cruel with them? There are times you need to be able to shut up."

Love the frankness...LOL

Love Marat! I saw the 60 minutes interview. What a crock, and really, how ungrateful. Andre wants compassion? I agree with Marat - just give it away, give it away, give it away, now!
Rafterfan , 11/10/09 2:01 PM
I'm going to miss Safin! he's a straight up kinda guy.He tell it like it is:)
He doesn't sugar coat his answers to guestions.
alik , 11/10/09 2:09 PM
Marat always speaks what we think -- but we are always trying to be nice and politically correct.
jessica4stein , 11/10/09 2:13 PM
i think safin hit the nail on the head there. the atp did agassi a favour, so why the hell is agassi ruining them now?
Sib69 , 11/10/09 2:17 PM
Although I don't like the idea of 'covering it up', it is now past due, case expires (I think) already. Now I'm worried about Richard's case -- if this stupid revelation is taken into consideration.
jessica4stein , 11/10/09 2:40 PM
LOL, Marat. That's hilarious. i wish Andre would just...be quiet now. tanking matches, failing drug tests. What's next?
cherylmurray , 11/10/09 4:08 PM
This is pure honesty. Thank you Safin!
Alexa , 11/10/09 5:29 PM
LOL if safin is going out, he is going out swinging with all guns blazing!
he ripped into birdman berdych, then roddick, now agassi!
i say federer, nadal and the woman's tour are next on the hit list!
attackingtennisrulez , 11/10/09 5:44 PM
nah Safin loves Federer
but WTA Tour is definitely a prime candidate. I agree that Safin will produce something special at his last press conference, presumably after his match with Del Potro.
RickyDimon , 11/10/09 6:09 PM
I think Safin has much respect for Federer and he loves Rafa too, treating him like his little brother. I dont think Safin will say anything bad about both Fed and Rafa.
luckystar , 11/10/09 6:38 PM
Priceless , Marat , absolutely priceless! Oh and Ricky , doesn't everybody love Fed except the Nadal fans on tennistalk?
chr18 , 11/10/09 7:56 PM
Hey, Chr and your 18 grand slam singles titles, there's plenny-a-love for Roger Federer from some of us Rafans, y'know...
gorafago , 11/10/09 8:34 PM
chr18, how do you know that everybody love Fed? Any proof?
luckystar , 11/10/09 8:47 PM
Respect to you Mr Safin!!! no matter what you are honest and truthful. people in general do not like to hear the truth that is why people like you are always slagged off. people especially other tennis players should class you as a role model and not agassi when he has confessed to clear his guilty conscience. I hope you enjoy your retirement and do not anything stupid, eg, publishing a book or making mistakes like agassi. you are definitely going to be missed in the tennis world...
stokes , 11/10/09 8:54 PM
I think I agree with Safin of not wanting to do an autobiography. How he chooses to live his life is up to him, and he certainly need not disclose it to everyone. He is a wise man, though quite a headcase on the tennis court.
luckystar , 11/10/09 9:36 PM
chr18 you're funny...I have been so proud of you..just when i thought you were making great strides forward now you take 2 steps back.
I guess that's what i get for think.
alik , 11/10/09 9:40 PM
Safin = complete GOLD. I am going to miss this guy so so so very much. Speaks his mind, never sugarcoats things, never bothers about being PC. He probably spoke what was on everyone's mind but everyone else didn't want to say it. :D
Am I the only one hoping for a the MASSIVE upset of Delpo v Safin? To be honest I actually want Safin to WIN the Bercy title although I know the possibility is like next to nil. :(
jyannis , 11/10/09 9:44 PM
jyannis, we all hope, but it might be a bit unrealistic :)

LORD POLONIUS
What do you read, my lord?
HAMLET
Words, words, words.
L. P. What is the matter, my lord?
H. ...Slanders, sir: for the satirical rogue says here
that old men have grey beards, that their faces are
wrinkled, their eyes purging thick amber and
plum-tree gum and that they have a plentiful lack of
wit, together with most weak hams: all which, sir,
though I most powerfully and potently believe, yet
I hold it not honesty to have it thus set down...
------
Just to the point, I think. Shameless (can't help myself with a softer word) Andre urgently has to shut up, Cheryl is more than right. But Marat is also too loquacious, to my taste - at least, for a member of the same guild (not even saying in general) it's better to be "quieter" in judging...In fact, they both speak much how they are/were tired of tennis life but the same does NOT go for their pressers! Well, peace to them...

Don't get me wrong, I like Safin as much as the next person, but I would just like to enter the following quote, taken from BBC's story today about Safin's farewell match with DelPo, into the record:
After his early Wimbledon exit to compatriot Dmitry Tursunov in 2004, Safin said: "I don't like to play on this surface. After a while, I get bored. I completely lost motivation, and I gave up. I love tennis, but I just don't like grass."
So ... Safin gave up ... in a tennis match ... and lost ...
You know, I didn't look, but did Safin pay back the millions or titles he won? Just wondering.
Kettle, meet the pot.
