  • Federer in difficult half of Paris draw

    11/9/09 4:08 AM | Ricky Dimon
Federer in difficult half of Paris draw Roger Federer will have to navigate his way through a tough draw if he wants to head into London's World Tour Finals with the momentum of a Paris Masters title.

Considering just how many players have been limping through the final weeks of this grueling 2009 campaign on the ATP Tour, the regular-season finale in Paris boasts a remarkably strong draw.

Andy Roddick, David Nalbandian, Sam Querrey, and David Ferrer (among others) are out, but the most of the other top players are good--well, good enough--to go.

Although the draw looks relatively well-balanced, Roger Federer's top half is slightly stronger. Federer could meet Gael Monfils in the third round and either Marin Cilic or Fernando Verdasco in the quarters. Unseeded Stanislas Wawrinka, who played well last week in Basel before falling to Novak Djokovic, will be looking to take out a seed or two and he could set up an all-Swiss third-round affair with the world No. 1.

A loaded second quarter of the draw features Juan Martin Del Potro, Fernando Gonzalez, Valencia champion Andy Murray, and Basel semifinalist Radek Stepanek. Del Potro has been suffering from a wrist injury ever since toppling Federer in a five-set U.S. Open final, but he is on a collision course with Murray for the Paris quarterfinals if he is 100 percent. A dangerous crop of unseeded players will be hoping to shake things up in Murray's quarter; among them are John Isner, Viktor Troicki, James Blake, and soon-to-be-retired Marat Safin.

Safin will begin his final tournament against unheralded French qualifier Thierry Ascione. Should Safin advance, he will be hard-pressed to prolong his career against Del Potro.

In the other half of the draw, meanwhile, Djokovic and Rafael Nadal will be tested by Nikolay Davydenko, Gilles Simon, and London hopefuls Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Robin Soderling.

Murray has a tougher quarter, with the likes of Blake (2nd round), Stepanek and Del Potro.

I wonder if it will be Delpo, Murray or Nole who puts Roger out of his misery again.
