The top seeds in the first half of the draw have made their way into the semifinals in Valencia. No. 1 seed Andy Murray and No. 4 Fernando Verdasco successfully navigated their quarterfinal matches.
Andy Murray def. Albert Montanes 6-4, 6-2
Scotland’s Andy Murray has been sidelined for the past two months with a wrist injury. Murray’s second-round match showed all the signs of lack of match play rust, as he dropped a set to Argentina’s Leonardo Mayer before pulling out the win in the end. The Scot was much better on Friday. Montanes secured a service break against Murray in the first set, but breaks of serve are not uncommon for the Scot. Murray wins tennis matches on the strength of his return, not his serve, as evidenced by the two breaks of serve he secured in the opening set.
The second set was pure, vintage Murray. The Scot finally looked back to his normal self. Montanes was dragged around court, while he struggled to find an answer to Murray’s shot selection.
Fernando Verdasco def. Tommy Robredo 6-3, 6-2
Spain’s Fernando Verdasco had an easy win over countryman Tommy Robredo to make his own way to the Valencia semifinals. Robredo had been playing well up until this point in the tournament, but he was no match for Verdasco’s brutal hard court game. Verdasco sailed through the match in an hour and 15 minutes. Robredo was broken three times and was unable to return the favor even once. Verdasco will move into a blockbuster semifinal against Murray.
