  • Wawrinka advances in Basel to play Djokovic

    11/6/09 12:48 AM | Ricky Dimon
Wawrinka advances in Basel to play Djokovic Stanislas Wawrinka defeats Jarkko Nieminen in three sets en route to a quarterfinal meeting with Novak Djokovic. Evgeny Korolev also advances.

    (6) Stanislas Wawrinka vs. Jarkko Nieminen 7-5, 2-6, 6-1

Wawrinka survived a series of momentum shifts to overcome Nieminen on Thursday night. The No. 6 seeded needed exactly two hours to set up a quarterfinal clash against second-seeded Novak Djokovic. Nieminen was in control early, but the 122nd-Finn squandered a chance to serve for the opening set at 5-4 and he ended up getting broken at 5-6 as well.

Sets two and three saw the two players take turns seizing huge advantages. Nieminen sprinted to a 4-0 lead in the second and eased through it 6-2. With the crowd behind Wawrinka, however, the world No. 21 recovered and raced out to a 5-0 lead in the final frame of play. Nieminen finally got on the scoreboard for 1-5, but Wawrinka, who won 13 of 14 first-serve points in set three, served out the proceedings in routine fashion. The victor fired 10 aces on the way to a meeting with Djokovic, who double-bageled Jan Hernych earlier in the day.

    Evgeny Korolev d. Jeremy Chardy 6-4, 7-6(1)

Korolev needed just one hour and 11 minutes to get past Chardy on Thursday afternoon in Basel and book a quarterfinal date with Roger Federer. The in-form Russian lost only six points in his first five service games, so one break was easily enough for him to take a one-set advantage.

Chardy seemed to be on his way to returning the favor in the second frame of play, as a surged to a 5-2 advantage without dropping a single point on serve. Suddenly at 5-3, however, Chardy played a poor game and donated serve. The 22-year-old Frenchman was all but finished after that meltdown. He managed to hold at 5-6 to force a tiebreaker, but managed to win only one more point the rest of the day. Korolev survived 12 Chardy aces en route to his fourth quarterfinal appearance of the fall season.
