Russians Nikolay Davydenko and Mikhail Youzhny made their way into the Valencia quarterfinals, to be played on Friday.
Nikolay Davydenko def. Juan Monaco 6-3, 7-5
Argentina’s Juan Monaco occasionally attempts to play on faster surfaces, but he is primarily a clay-court specialist. His serve does not have enough bite on it to have any effect on his opponent, and Thursday’s loss to Nikolay Davydenko was further proof. Monaco was broken four times in the match, once in the first set and three in the second.
The Argentine kept the second set close simply based on the fact that Davydenko’s own form slipped. The Russian gave up two service breaks, but he was able to snag the match-winning break of serve at the tail end of the set.
Mikhail Youzhny def. Pablo Cuevas 6-2, 2-6, 6-1
Mikhail Youzhny’s second-round match against Pablo Cuevas of Uruguay was a bit of a roller coaster. Youzhny breezed through the first set easily, as he did not face a single break point and he broke Cuevas twice to take a convincing 6-2 lead. Cuevas turned the tables on Youzhny in the second set. Suddenly it was the Russian who was unable to hold serve and Cuevas’ turn to face no break points.
Youzhny woke up again in the third. His first-serve percentage continued to hover in the 50% range, but he was tough on the big points. The winner went two for three on break points and fought off both break-point chances against him.
