Gael Monfils’ struggles continued in Valencia on Wednesday as the Frenchman was upset by Guillermo Garcia-Lopez.
Guillermo Garcia-Lopez def. Gael Monfils 6-2, 7-5
Last week in Vienna, Gael Monfils was pressed hard by Guillermo Garcia-Lopez. On Wednesday, the Spaniard went one better and actually upset Monfils. In the first set, the Frenchman donated three double-faults to Garcia-Lopez’s cause. Monfils was broken twice and never got a look at the Garcia-Lopez serve.
Monfils played better in the second set, but Garcia-Lopez was already dialed in on Monfils’ first serve. It was too little too late for the Frenchman; Garcia-Lopez secured the only break of the second set to take the upset win.
Feliciano Lopez def. Alberto Martin 7-5, 6-3
In the battle of the Spaniards, Feliciano Lopez dispatched Alberto Martin in straight sets. Lopez went into the match as the clear favorite; he is essentially a hard-court player and he is at his best on faster surfaces. Martin is a more traditional Spanish player, who prefers clay to other surfaces. Martin put in a good showing in the first set. He did not have a whiff at Lopez’s serve, but he was able to fight off two of the three break points against him.
Martin made a little progress on the Lopez serve in the second set, but Lopez was able to pull out some clutch serving to hold. Unfortunately for Martin, Lopez secured a service break early in the set, which he never gave up.
