  • Nieminen, Troicki storm into Basel second round

    11/4/09 12:11 AM | Ricky Dimon
Nieminen, Troicki storm into Basel second round Jarkko Nieminen and Viktor Troicki advance to the Basel second round on Tuesday with straight-set victories. Michael Lammer is also victorious.

    Jarkko Nieminen d. Julien Benneteau 7-5, 6-2

Nieminen improved to 3-0 lifetime against Benneteau with a straight-set victory in the first round of the Davidoff Swiss Indoors on Tuesday evening. After one hour and 34 minutes of play, Nieminen booked a second-round encounter with either Ivan Ljubicic or Stanislas Wawrinka. The 122nd-ranked Finn earned his second break of the match at 5-5 in the first set and served out the opening frame of play in style. From there it was all over for Benneteau, who had been in good form prior to this week but saved none of the two break points he faced in the second set.

    Viktor Troicki d. Benjamin Becker 6-2, 7-6(5)

Troicki dispatched Becker in one hour and 27 minutes on Tuesday afternoon to reach the Basel second round. The 29th-ranked Serb has been in stellar form of late and it continued at the expense of a reeling Becker, who is now 1-9 in his last 10 matches dating back to before the U.S. Open. Troicki used two breaks of serve to dominate the first set, but Becker was more competitive in the second. The 43rd-ranked German forced a tiebreaker, but faltered late and lost it seven points to five. Next up for Troicki is either Philipp Petzschner or No. 4 seed Marin Cilic.

    (Q) Michael Lammer d. Daniel Koellerer 3-6, 6-2, 7-5

Lammer, an unheralded Swiss qualifier, staged a series of comebacks to stun Koellerer after two hours and seven minutes late on Tuesday night. The world No. 167 dropped the first set in listless fashion, but turned his game around to dominate the second. Koellerer again took the lead on different occasions in the second. Twice, however, the 74th-ranked Austrian gave back service breaks, with the second donation coming at 4-3. Koellerer was all but finished after that, although he saved match point after match point at 5-6 before finally dropping serve--and with it, the match. Next up for Lammer is countryman Marco Chiudinelli.
