Evgeny Korolev powers his way past Simone Bolelli on Tuesday afternoon in Basel. Korolev is joined in the second round by Marco Chiudinelli, who treated the Swiss crowd to a three-set upset of Philipp Kohlschreiber.
(WC) Marco Chiudinelli d. (8) Philipp Kohlschreiber 7-6(5), 3-6, 7-5
Chiudinelli treated his Swiss fans to a perfect start to the day on Tuesday at the Davidoff Swiss Indoors. After two hours and 15 minutes of back-and-forth tennis, Chiudinelli outlasted Kohlschreiber to book a spot in the Basel second round. It was competitive right from the start, with a total of seven break points saved en route to a first-set tiebreaker. Chiudinelli earned a mini-break at 3-3 and struck three service winners the rest of the way to take the 'breaker seven points to five. Kohlschreiber, however, turned the tide with a break at 4-3 in the second and he served it out at 5-3 to force a decisive third set.
The eighth-seeded German had plenty of chances throughout the final frame of play, and even went up a break for 3-2. He consolidated the advantage for 4-2 and promptly earned a 0-30 lead in Chiudinelli's next service game before the momentum shifted again. Chiudinelli managed to hold for 3-4 and suddenly seized his first break of the afternoon to level things at 4-4. Serving at 5-5, the 73rd-ranked Swiss put himself in a 0-40 hole. Thanks to some clutch serving and a handful of dismal forehands from his opponent, Chiudinelli thwarted all three break points and ended up holding for 6-5. A mentally distraught Kohlschreiber could not recover, and he dropped serve yet again to throw away the match with a final forehand error. Chiudinelli, who finished with 11 aces to Kohlschreiber's 15, will next face either Daniel Koellerer or qualifier Michael Lammer.
(Q) Evgeny Korolev d. Simone Bolelli 3-6, 7-6(4), 6-2
Korolev's stellar play continued as Bolelli's prolonged skid grew even longer on Tuesday, but not before a spirited battle took place. Korolev needed two hours and 10 minutes and had to come back from a set deficit in order to reach the Basel second round. Break points were the story of of the first set; Bolelli saved all eight of Korolev's chances and the 94th-ranked Italian managed to convert one of his seven opportunities, so the lone break was enough for him to earn a one-set advantage.
More of the same continued in the second set, with Bolelli saving two break points and Korolev thwarting three. The talented Russian, who has already reached three ATP quarterfinals during this fall season, donated only one service point in the ensuing tiebreaker and he seized three mini-breaks of his own, the third of which finished off the 'breaker in style at 6-4. From there it was all over Bolelli, who surrendered serve at 2-2 in the third and never recovered. Korolev, who never faced a break point throughout the final frame of play, broke again at 4-2 and served out the match in routine fashion. Next up for Korolev is either Jeremy Chardy or No. 7 seed James Blake.
