Roger Federer is back in action for the first time since the U.S. Open. He leads the way as Basel's No. 1 seed, followed by Novak Djokovic, Fernando Gonzalez, and Marin Cilic.
For the first time since losing the U.S. Open final in five sets to Juan Martin Del Potro, Roger Federer will be back on the tennis court. After skipping the entire Asian swing, most notably the Shanghai Masters, Federer returns in his home country, headlining the field at the Davidoff Swiss Indoors.
The three-time defending champion of this event, Federer is once again heavily-favored to take the title. With 500 points available to the eventual champion, however, this Basel tournament has lured an outstanding field, so the world No. 1 will see more than enough competition.
In the early stages of the week, though, Federer should cruise. The 15-time Grand Slam champion opens with a qualifier and will then face either Andreas Seppi or countryman Stephane Bohli. Federer's nearest seeded and potential quarterfinal opponent is James Blake, but the No. 8 seed faces a tough opener against Jeremy Chardy. If seeds hold true to form, Federer would face No. 3 Fernando Gonzalez in the semifinals.
If Federer received a good draw, Djokovic perhaps got an even better one. The second-seeded Serb begins against Andreas Beck, then should cruise over either Jan Hernych or qualifier before possibly meeting Stanislas Wawrinka or Ivan Ljubicic in the quarterfinals. Much later in the week, potential semifinal opponents for Djokovic include No. 4 seed Marin Cilic, Radek Stepanek, or big-serving Ivo Karlovic.
In addition to Blake vs. Chardy, other first-round matches to watch feature Gonzalez vs. John Inser, Wawrinka vs. Ljubicic, Cilic vs. Philipp Petzschner, and Richard Gasquet vs. an in-form Horacio Zeballos.
