The end-of-season retirement cluster which started at the Shanghai Masters continued in St. Petersburg. Half of Thursday’s second round matches resulted in retirement.
Marat Safin def. Igor Andreev 6-3, 0-1(ret.)
Russia’s Marat Safin will have at least one more match to enjoy playing for his countrymen. The Russian received a free pass to the quarterfinals when opponent and fellow Russian Igor Andreev retured from their second round match. Andreev made it through the opening set, though he was soundly outplayed by Safin. He served (and won) one game of the second set, and then he retired with a knee injury. Safin will take on Denis Istomin in the quarters.
Denis Istomin def. Mikhail Youzhny 6-2, 2-1 (ret.)
The other injury casualty from Thursday was another Russian, Mikhail Youzhny. Uzbekistan’s Istomin was dominant in the opening set, where he broke a hobbled Youzhny twice to take a commanding 6-2 lead. Just 3 games into the second set, Youzhny called Istomin to the net, and he retired with a lower back injury. Istomin will have a crack at Marat Safin in the quarters on Friday
