  • Lopez, Tipsarevic and Monfils advance to quarters

Lopez, Tipsarevic and Monfils advance to quarters Seeds Feliciano Lopez and Gael Monfils moved into the last eight in Vienna, to be played on Friday. They are joined by Serbia’s Janko Tipsarevic.

    Feliciano Lopez def. Daniel Koellerer

Spain’s Feliciano Lopez breezed past unpredictable Austrian Daniel Koellerer in easy straight sets in Vienna on Thursday. Lopez came into the tournament on something of a roll. The last quarter of the season is Lopez’s best anyway, since he prefers fast hard courts, and this year, he pumped up his ranking with a semifinal showing at the Shanghai Masters. Lopez outplayed Koellerer in every way possible. The Spaniard had eight break-point chances in the match; he was able to convert half of them. Koellerer only managed to break Lopez once, and that wasn’t enough to make up for the Austrian’s own weak serving.

Gael Monfils def. Jan Hajek 6-1, 2-6, 6-4

France’s Gael Monfils had a middle set scare against the Czech Republic’s Jan Hajek. Monfils rolled through the first set so dominantly that he only lost one point on his own serve and six points on Hajek’s. Monfils’ level dropped dramatically in the second set. The Frenchman did not even earn a break point chance, much less secure a break of serve. Hajek took advantage of Monfils’ lapse to break the Frenchman twice. The third set was back to business as usual for Monfils. The Frenchman was crisp on serve once again and he dominated the set, though he only won by a single service break.

Janko Tipsarevic def. Michael Berrer 7-6(3), 6-1

Germany’s Michael Berrer put in a good show in the first set against Serbia’s Janko Tipsarevic. The German was able to weather winning only 29% of his second-serve points and being broken twice. Tipsarevic played poorly enough that Berrer was able to match him for the breaks to send the set to a tiebreaker, but all of Berrer’s hard work was for naught. Tipsarevic dominated the breaker, then rolled through the second set 6-1.
