Croatia’s Marin Cilic got through his second-round match against Daniel Brands, but not before he was sent through his paces.
Marin Cilic was forced to save a set point in his straight-set victory over Germany’s Daniel Brands on Thursday. The Croat is the top-ranked player in Vienna and was the heavy favorite going into this second-round match. Brands is ranked 125th in the world to Cilic’s No. 13.
Cilic struggled a bit on his serve in the opening set. The Croat served up just four aces and his first-serve percentage hovered around 55%. Without the weapon of his big first serve, Cilic was vulnerable to Brands’ return game. The German was able to take advantage with a break of serve, though he was also broken once.
The tiebreaker was well played by Brands. The German even had a set point before eventually buckling under the pressure of Cilic’s game.
Cilic did not fare much better with his service numbers in the second set. His first-serve percentage dipped below 50% and he tossed in three aces. Unfortunately for Brands, he lost the spark he had in the opening set. Brands did not have any chances to break Cilic’s serve, and the service game that he gave up cost him the match.
