  • Stepanek, Monfils and Almagro advace in Vienna

    10/29/09 2:07 AM | Cheryl Murray
Stepanek, Monfils and Almagro advace in Vienna Wednesday was a good day for the seeds in Vienna as almost all the top players advanced.

Radek Stepanek def. Frederico Gil 6-2, 6-3

The Czech Republic’s Radek Stepanek had no difficulty getting past Portuguese clay-courter Frederico Gil in their second round match on Wednesday. Gil’s return game was completely ineffective against the highly aggressive net game of Stepanek. Gil did not earn a single break point in the one hour and nine-minute match. Stepanek attacked Gil’s first and second serve, and as a result he won almost half the points on the return. The Czech broke twice in the first set and once in the second for an easy path to Vienna’s quarterfinals.

    Gael Monfils def. Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 7-5, 6-4

Wednesday’s match between Gael Monfils of France and Spain’s Guillermo Garcia-Lopez was not as close as the scoreline would suggest. Monfils was never in danger of losing his serve; the Frenchman faced just two break points in the match. The reason the score is as close as it was is that Garcia-Lopez was tough on break points. Monfils had eight chances in the match, but he was only able to convert one in each set. Monfils served well, hitting seven aces and just one double fault in the one hour and 20-minute match.

Nicolas Almagro def. Wayne Odesnik 6-4, 6-4

A single break of serve in each set gave Spain’s Nicolas Almagro the win over American Wayne Odesnik. Almagro was forced to do nothing extraordinary to get the win except keep consistent. Odesnik never had a chance at a service break. The Spaniard will advance into the quarterfinals with the straight-set victory.
