Amid the calls from anti-smoking for for Roger Federer to withdraw from his home event next week in Basel due to title sponsorship by luxury good provider Davidoff, plans are going ahead to honor the native son.
The event where the world No. 1 worked as a ballkid and grew his love of the game will stage a ceremony Monday night to celebrate the record 15 Grand Slam titles of the Swiss hero, achieved during Wimbledon this summer.
After that, Federer will take to the court at the venue named after him last year to play his opening match.
Federer, who has won the last three Basel editions, will be making his return after five weeks of rest and family time with his three-month-old twins and wife Mirka at their home near Lake Zurich.
He is due to play Basel and the Paris Masters before headlining at the World Tennis Finals in London beginnig November 22.
Organizers say the tournament's 40th edition will feature a concert by Spanish soprano Montserrat Caballé in a mix of sport and culture. The Catalan opera singer will be accompanied by the Opera Choir of the Theater Basel and the Basel Festival Orchestra.
