Top tournament seed Mikhail Youzhny advanced to the second round on Wednesday with an easy win over Andrey Golubev.
Mikhail Youzhny def. Andrey Golubev 6-3, 6-2
Russia’s Mikhail Youzhny breezed through his first-round match against Kazakhstan’s Andrey Golubev. Youzhny was efficient throughout the proceedings. Golubev could not make a dent in the Russian’s serve; he did not earn a single break point in the one hour and 10-minute match. Youzhny was not as forgiving with his own return game, as Golubev struggled to win points even on his first serve. The Kazakh managed to win just over 50% of his first-serve points, though he did much better on second serve. Youzhny went one for four on break points to take the opening set.
The second set was more of the same. Golubev struggled on serve and he made no dent with his return game. Of note, his percent of points won on first serve actually went down from the first set. He won a shocking 47% of the points when he got his first serve in. Youzhny neatly tied up the match win with another pair of service breaks.
Bjorn Phau def. Karol Beck 6-4, 2-1 (ret.)
Germany’s Bjorn Phau got a free trip into the St. Petersburg quarterfinals when opponent Karol Beck retired in the second set of their match on Wednesday. This is the best ATP result for Phau since he made the third round of New Haven prior to the US Open.
