  • Hanescu into St. Petersburg QFs, Kunitsyn upsets Cuevas

Hanescu into St. Petersburg QFs, Kunitsyn upsets Cuevas Victor Hanescu reaches the St. Petersburg quarterfinals on Wednesday afternoon. Igor Kunitsyn, meanwhile, kicks off his week with a straight-set upset of No. 7 seed Pablo Cuevas.

    (2) Victor Hanescu d. (SE) Ilya Marchenko 6-3, 6-4

Marchenko made a surprising run to the Moscow semifinals last week and Hanescu has been in dismal form of late, but the roles were reversed on Wednesday. Hanescu never faced a break point and needed just one hour and 18 minutes to book a spot in the quarterfinals of the St. Petersburg Open. The 6'6'' Romanian earned one break in each set, and that was easily enough for him to roll through Marchenko without any trouble. Hanescu finished with seven aces and won an impressive 32 of 36 first-serve points, while the underdog Ukrainian managed just one ace and lost more than half of his second-serve points.

    Igor Kunitsyn d. (7) Pablo Cuevas 6-4, 6-3

Kunitsyn has been struggling throughout 2009 and he is down to No. 103 in the world, but the veteran Russian was playing on his favorite surface and Cuevas, a clay-court specialist, was totally out of his element on the indoor hard courts of St. Petersburg. The result was an easy straight-set win for the crowd favorite in just one hour and nine minutes. Kunitsyn gave a break back midway through the opening frame of play, but he broke again at 5-4 to finish off the set in style. Two more breaks in the second set gave Kunitsyn a chance to serve for the match at 5-3, and he handled the task well to sprint into round two. Kunitsyn will face Russian wildcard Michail Elgin on Thursday for a place in the quarterfinals.

    (8) Horacio Zeballos d. (Q) Oleksandr Dolgopolov Jr. 6-3, 6-1

Dolgopolov won his first career ATP main-draw match on Tuesday when Robby Ginepri retired in the second set with a hip injury, but Zeballos was not as kind to the Ukrainian qualifier in round two. Zeballos advanced after a mere 49 minutes of play, losing just four games without facing a single break point. The 54th-ranked Argentine won nine of 12 points even when he had to toss in a second serve as he outclassed Dolgopolov in all facets of the game. Next up for Zeballos is a quarterfinal clash against Ernests Gulbis, a straight-set winner over No. 4 seed Jeremy Chardy.
