No. 3 seed Viktor Troicki met with an early exit on Monday in St. Petersburg. Joining Troicki on a flight out of St. Petersburg will be Rainer Schuettler.
Karol Beck def. Viktor Troicki 7-6(4), 4-6, 6-4
Serbia’s Viktor Troicki was sent packing in round one by Slovakia’s Karol Beck. Troicki played a dreadful match by his standards. He permitted Beck to snag the opening set from him in the tiebreaker with an early minibreak. The two men each had a single chance to break serve in the first set, and neither was able to convert. Troicki took a measure of control in the second set, as he was able to break Beck twice to level the match and force a deciding set. The No. 3 seed did not serve well enough in the third set to keep up with Beck. The match was decided by a single break of serve in the third for Beck.
Denis Istomin def. Rainer Schuettler 6-4, 6-4
The news continues to be bad for Rainer Schuettler. The German was defeated in the opening round of St. Petersburg by Denis Istomin, a player who is currently ranked outside the top 100. Schuettler was a victim of his own first-serve percentage in the opening set. He put in just over half of his first serves, resulting in two breaks of serve for Istomin. Schuettler’s return let him down in the second set. He did not get a single break point chance for the set. Istomin secured another break of Schuettler’s serve to pull off the minor upset.
