Tuesday was business as usual for Feliciano Lopez and Radek Stepanek, as they made their way into the second round of the Bank Austria Tennis Trophy.
Feliciano Lopez def. Andreas Haider-Maurer 6-4, 6-4
Austrian wildcard entrant Andreas Haider-Maurer acquitted himself well against a more experienced much higher-ranked opponent on Tuesday. The first set featured sloppy serving from both men. Lopez put in just 48% of his first serves, though the percentage was good enough to keep Haider-Maurer from getting even a single break point. The Austrian’s serving was even worse; he served at a dismal 31%. Lopez was able to secure a single break of serve to take the lead.
Haider-Maurer was able to make headway on Lopez’s serve in the second set, even converting one of the two break points he had. Unfortunately for the Austrian, his serve let him down, as Lopez broke twice to take the match.
Radek Stepanek def. Lukasz Kubot 6-4, 6-1
The Czech Republic’s Radek Stepanek had a routine win over Lukasz Kubot of Poland to move into the second round. Kubot offered little resistance to Stepanek in the one hour 23-minute match. Stepanek was particularly tough on the return. He racked up 11 break-point chances, and converted on four of those. The Czech served 10 aces in the match, and though Kubot had two break points, he was unable to convert.
Stepanek will take on Portugal’s Frederico Gil in the second round.
