Veterans Ivan Ljubicic and Arnaud Clement make smooth progress into the Lyon second round on Tuesday. Fabrice Santoro, however, goes out quietly to Albert Montanes.
(3) Ivan Ljubicic d. Martin Vassallo Arguello 6-3, 6-4
Ljubicic had no trouble in dispatching Vassallo Arguello after one hour and 28 minutes in the first round of the Grand Prix de Tennis de Lyon on Tuesday. Although he served at a mere 48 percent throughout the opening frame of play, Ljubicic won all 13 of his first-serve points and never faced a break point. The 6'4'' Croat served better in the second and fended off one break point en route to a routine victory. Vassallo Arguello served well the entire way, but the underdog Argentine was done in by winning just 44 percent of his second-serve points. Next up for Ljubicic will be a fellow veteran in either Nicolas Kiefer or Sebastien Grosjean.
(8) Albert Montanes d. Fabrice Santoro 6-4, 6-4
Despite playing Montanes on a favorable surface (indoor hard courts) and in front of French fans, Santoro succumbed to the Spaniard in straight sets without much of a fight. Completely outplayed from the baseline, Santoro lost despite firing 13 aces to Montanes' none. It could have been more competitive, but the 35-year-old squandered all three of the break-point chances he had during the first set and missed two more in the second, as well. Whenever Santoro failed to take control of points right from the start, he almost had no chance. Montanes won an impressive 68 percent of the points in which he got a look at a second-serve return. Lyon's No. 8 seed will face another Frenchman, Florent Serra, in the second round.
(WC) Arnaud Clement d. Oscar Hernandez 6-1, 6-3
Clement dominated this battle of 31-year-olds in only one hour and seven minutes on Tuesday night. The veteran Frenchman took advantage of five double-faults by his opponent during the first set and never looked back. After breaking serve twice in the opening frame of play, Clement took complete control of the match at 3-3 in the second. Another break in the seventh game of the set (Clement's third of the set and fifth of the match) all but finished Hernandez, who won an abysmal 42 percent of his first-serve points in set two and 27 percent of his second-serve points. For the match, the near-hopeless Spaniard won just five of 21 second-serve points. Clement can expect a tougher test from No. 7 seed Benjamin Becker in round two.
