  • Chardy advances in St. Petersburg, Ginepri retires

    10/27/09 6:27 PM | Ricky Dimon
Chardy advances in St. Petersburg, Ginepri retires Jeremy Chardy reaches the second round in St. Petersburg with a victory on Tuesday afternoon. Ilya Marchenko also keeps up his fine form, but Robby Ginepri is not as fortunate.

    (4) Jeremy Chardy d. (Q) Petru-Alexandru Luncanu 6-2, 6-2

Taking advantage of an unheralded opponent who has never won an ATP-level match, Chardy raced into the second round of the St. Petersburg Open on Monday after just 62 minutes of play. The fourth-seeded Frenchman enjoyed an incredible day on serve, blasting six aces and no double-faults while putting in 77 percent of his first deliveries. He lost a mere seven points in eight service games, even winning eight of nine points when he had to toss in a second offering. Luncanu, a 322nd-ranked Romanian, was broken twice in each set, more than enough times for Chardy to take this match with ease. Next up for Chardy is a slumping Ernests Gulbis, who managed to score a victory over Florian Mayer on Sunday.

    (Q) Oleksandr Dolgopolov Jr. d. Robby Ginepri 6-2, 1-0, retired

Ginepri enjoyed a quarterfinal appearance at the Kremlin Cup last week, but he never looked right in St. Petersburg on Tuesday against Dolgopolov. The 88th-ranked American won only six points in four return games during the first set and donated his own serve twice. Dolgopolov pummeled Ginepri's second serves to the tune of winning eight of 11 of those points. The 142nd-ranked Ukrainian, who went through qualifying just to get into the main draw, also broke immediately in set two and that's when Ginepri called it quits. Dolgopolov will take on No. 8 seed Horacio Zeballos for a spot in the quarterfinals.

(SE) Ilya Marchenko d. Fabio Fognini 6-4, 6-1

Marchenko qualified for the Moscow main draw last week and went all the way to the semifinals. The result earned him a special exemption into this week's St. Petersburg Open, and so far he is showing no signs of slowing down. A 150th-ranked Ukrainian, Marchenko completely dominated with his serve in set one, winning 20 of 23 points in five service games. One break was easily enough for him to take the opening frame of play, and from there it was all over. Fognini got a look at two break points in the second, but the Italian--out of his element on indoor hard courts--failed to capitalize on either chance. Marchenko added two more breaks of his own before serving out the proceedings at 5-2. No. 2 seed Victor Hanescu, who advanced on Sunday over Teimuraz Gabashvili, awaits Marchenko in the second round.
