Russia’s Igor Andreev slipped past Potito Starace of Italy in easy straight sets on Tuesday in St. Petersburg.
Both Igor Andreev and Potito Starace are clay-courters by preference and skill. Starace in particular rarely ventures off the dirt unless he has no other choice in the matter. Not surprisingly, all of the Italian’s best results come on clay. He is ranked 68th in the world right now.
Andreev has a more versatile game. The Russian is ranked 38th in the world, and while he might prefer to play on clay, his game translates fairly well to other surfaces. Andreev’s last good result was on the hard courts of New Haven, where he made the semifinals.
Tuesday’s match was won handily by Andreev. The first set was somewhat competitive, as Starace even managed to secure a break of Andreev’s serve. The Russian, however, was the clearly dominant player in the set and he was able to break Starace twice to take the lead.
Starace had some chances in the second set. Both men earned an equal number of break points (three), but Andreev fought all of his off, while Starace was broken twice. Andreev will take on the winner of the blockbuster first-round match between Marat Safin and Richard Gasquet.
