  • Monaco, Benneteau storm into Lyon second round

    10/26/09 8:47 PM | Ricky Dimon
Monaco, Benneteau storm into Lyon second round Juan Monaco erases Josselin Ouanna in straight sets on Monday afternoon in Lyon. The French fans have a more enjoyable night session, however, as Julien Benneteau makes quick work of Alberto Martin.

    (4) Juan Monaco d. Josselin Ouanna 6-3, 6-2

Monaco had won a mere three hard-court matches at 2009 ATP events prior to this week, but he needed just one hour--exactly--to dispose of Ouanna in the first round of the Grand Prix de Tennis de Lyon on Monday afternoon. To the chagrin of the French crowd, Ouanna fell behind by an early break in the opening set and never recovered. Monaco, who did not face a break point throughout the initial frame of play, added another break at 5-3 to finish it off in style.

With momentum in hand, the 30th-ranked Argentine raced to a 4-0 lead in set two. Monaco promptly surrendered serve at both 4-0 and 5-1, but Ouanna failed to hold a single time throughout the second. Lyon's No. 4 seed wrapped up the proceedings on his second match point (his first came on serve at 5-1) with a clean inside-out forehand winner. Monaco won an unbelievable 17 of 22 second-serve return points on his way to round two, where he will face either Michael Llodra or Lamine Ouahab.

    (5) Julien Benneteau vs. Alberto Martin 7-6(1), 6-1

Last year's Lyon runner-up, Benneteau got past Martin in one hour and 29 minutes on Tuesday night. Playing in front of his own fans and also having a clear surface advantage over Martin on indoor hard courts, the fifth-seeded Frenchman took a while to pull away from his Spanish opponent. Martin saved four break points in the first set as both men held all the way to a tiebreaker. Benneteau finally took command in the decider, seizing mini-breaks at 1-0 and 2-0 as he earned a quick 5-0 lead. Three points later, Benneteau finished the set off with a perfect serve-and-volley combination.

Martin could not bounce back in the second frame of play. He surrendered serve without much of a fight at 1-1 and from there it was all over. Benneteau did not face a break point in set two--or in the entire match--and added breaks at 3-1 and 5-1 to close out the match in style. The world No. 51 finished with six aces and one-double fault en route to a second-round clash against either Simon Greul or qualifier Kevin Anderson.
