Germany’s Daniel Brands and Nicolas Almagro of Spain advanced to the second round of the Bank Austria Tennis Trophy on Monday.
Daniel Brands def. Robert Kendrick 7-6(5), 7-5
In a match that turned into an ace-fest, Daniel Brands just slid past American Robert Kendrick in straight sets. Both men served well. Kendrick, who is known for his huge first serve, threw in 16 aces. Brands did his part to inflate the ace total with 13 of his own. The match came down to a few important points. The first set featured no service breaks and more interestingly, no break chance opportunities at all. Brands just snagged the set with a single mini-break in the tiebreaker. Both men made more progress on the return in the second set. Kendrick earned three break points but he only broke once. Brands had two break-point chances, but he was able to convert on both to take the match in straight sets.
Nicolas Almagro def. Peter Luczak 5-7, 7-6(3), 6-1
Elimination was close for Spain’s Nicolas Almagro. The first two sets were fiercely competitive, with Australia’s Peter Luczak coming out on top in a rocky first set. Both men were able to secure breaks of serve, but Luczak snagged the set-winning break as Almagro was serving to stay in the set. The Spaniard’s first-serve percentage dipped to below 50% in the second set, but he was strong on break points, going 4 for 4 to hold off Luczak. Almagro’s experience served him well in the tiebreak and he was able to hold Luczak to just three points. After the disappointment of losing the second set, Luczak’s game completely fell apart in the third set. Almagro broke the Aussie twice and did not face another break point.
