Janko Tipsarevic takes care of underdog Ilya Marchenko in the Moscow semifinals on Saturday afternoon. Tipsarevic is through to his first career ATP title match.
Janko Tipsarevic had no trouble handling the pressure of not only being a massive favorite, but also of bidding for the first ATP final of his career.
Taking advantage of an opponent unfamiliar with the latter stages of big tournaments, Tipsarevic rolled over Ilya Marchenko 6-1, 6-4 in the semifinals of the Kremlin Cup on Saturday afternoon. Tipsarevic booked a spot in his maiden title match after just one hour and 29 minutes of play.
Just as he did a day earlier against Evgeny Korolev, Marchenko started out extremely slow. The 190th-ranked Ukrainian, who won a shockingly bad four points in the entire first set against Korolev, got broken twice and managed only four return points during the opener against Tipsarevic.
The sixth-seeded Serb continued to dominate on serve during the second. Again he did not face a single break point, so one break was enough to give Tipsarevic, who won 16 of 19 first-serve points in set two, an easy straight-set victory.
“I am really happy with the way I handled the match, as I was the favorite and I don’t play a semifinal of a big event every day," said Tipsarevic. The world No. 46 finished with five aces and no double-faults while serving at 71 percent.
Tipsarevic will battle Russia's own Mikhail Youzhny for the title on Sunday. He is undefeated in two career meetings with the No. 3 seed.
