Influenza continues to take its toll on the ATP tour. The victim this time was Tommy Haas of Germany, who had to withdraw against Jarkko Nieminen. Marcos Baghdatis moved into the quarterfinals, as well.
Marcos Baghdatis def. Robert Kendrick 6-2, 6-2
American Robert Kendrick was doomed to failure in his second-round match against Marcos Baghdatis. Kendrick’s big weapon is his first serve, a shot that completely let him down on Thursday. Baghdatis was quick to jump on Kendrick’s weakness, as the Cypriot secured three service breaks in the opening set alone. Kendrick held just once, but he managed to break Baghdatis back at 3-2. The American started off a little better in the second set. He held in his first two service games, only to drop the next five in a row to give Baghdatis the easy victory.
Olivier Rochus def. Feliciano Lopez 4-6, 6-4, 6-1
Spaniard Feliciano Lopez played relatively well for the first two sets against Olivier Rochus of Belgium. The Rochus strategy was apparent from early in the match. He sent his forehand to Lopez’s weak backhand side. In the opening set, the two men stayed on serve until 4-4. Rochus tossed in a weak service game, including a double-fault and a backhand error on break point to give Lopez the only break of the set. Lopez served out the set to love to take the lead.
The second set played similarly to the first, except that Rochus was able to take advantage instead of Lopez. They remained on serve until 5-4 on the Spaniard’s serve. At 30-40, Rochus hit a blistering backhand pass, and just that quickly the set was over. Once Rochus got the early break in the deciding set for 2-0, Lopez completely fell apart. The Spaniard won just one game from that moment on.
