Thomas Enqvist will pick up from Mats Wilander as he takes over the captaincy of the Swedish Davis Cup team. Wilander retired this week to spend more time with his family in the western US.
Enqvist, who completed his last ATP-level match in November 2005, played Davis Cup for Sweden for nine years, compiling a 15-11 record and serving on championships teams in 1997 and 1998. Enqvist won 19 titles and reached one Grand Slam final (1999 Australian Open) on the ATP.
The winner of 19 titles will lead the former tennis powerhouse nation into a first-round World Group tie with Argentina March 5-7.
"It's an honor to be given this assignment and a fantastic heritage to take care of," the new skipper said on the federation website. "I hope my experiences as a player will come in handy."
