Robby Ginepri and Janko Tipsarevic ease into the Moscow quarterfinals on Thursday afternoon. They are joined there by qualifier Mikhail Kukushkin, a straight-set winner over Wayne Odesnik.
Robby Ginepri d. Marcel Granollers 7-6(5), 6-0
After battling through a competitive first set, Ginepri rolled over Granollers in one hour and 30 minutes to reach the quarterfinals of the Kremlin Cup on Thursday afternoon. The 92nd-ranked American is into his first quarterfinal since winning a title in Indianapolis at the beginning of this summer's U.S. Open Series. For a while, however, Ginepri's safe passage was in doubt. A total of two breaks were exchanged en route to a first-set tiebreaker, in which Granollers finally succumbed seven points to five. The 78th-ranked Spaniard completely went away after that, failing to win even a single game in set two. Ginepri finished with seven aces and no double-faults while saving nine of 10 break points. He will take on sixth-seeded Janko Tipsarevic for a spot in the Moscow semifinals.
(6) Janko Tipsarevic d. Christophe Rochus 6-4, 2-1, retired
Rochus never looked like he was feeling well on Thursday and Tipsarevic got a free pass into the quarterfinals after one hour and two minutes of play. The first set was relatively competitive, however, with Tipsarevic securing two service breaks to Rochus' one. The 46th-ranked Serb broke serve again at 1-1 in the second, and that's when his opponent called it quits. Tipsarevic finished with an impressive 13 aces in only six service games and he abused Rochus' serve to the tune of winning 12 of 17 second-serve return points.
(Q) Mikhail Kukushkin d. Wayne Odesnik 6-3, 6-4
Odesnik failed to reproduce the same kind of performance that he put on in a first-round upset win over No. 2 seed Victor Hanescu, but he at least played Kukushkin tougher than the 6-3, 6-4 scoreline suggests. Kukushkin saved all nine of the break points he faced to finally dispatch Odesnik after one hour and 41 minutes, an incredible amount of time for a total of just 19 games. As a result, one break in each set was enough for Kazakhstan's world No. 157, who had to qualify over the weekend just to get into the Moscow main draw. This is the second time in his career that Kukushkin has won two straight matches at an ATP event, and first time he has reached a quarterfinal. Next up for the qualifier is No. 6 seed Pablo Cuevas.
