Janko Tipsarevic eases past Daniel Koellerer on Tuesday in the Moscow first round. Tipsarevic is joined in the winner's circle by Wayne Odesnik and Marcel Granollers.
(6) Janko Tipsarevic d. Daniel Koellerer 6-4, 6-3
Tipsarevic needed just one hour and 23 minutes to cruise through his opener at the Kremlin Cup on Tuesday afternoon. Koellerer made it competitive throughout most of the first set, but the tide turned when he got broken at 4-5 while trying to stay in the opening frame of play. Tipsarevic, after getting broken once in the first, took care of his service games more easily in set two despite seeing a drop in his service percentage. The sixth-seeded Serb won all 15 of his first-serve points in the second net and never gave Koellerer a single break chance. As such, one break was enough for Tipsarevic to seal the deal in straights and set up a second-round encounter with Christophe Rochus.
Wayne Odesnik d. (2) Victor Hanescu 5-7, 7-5, 6-4
Hanescu was one point away from a straight-set victory on Tuesday afternoon, but Odesnik stormed back to upset the No. 2 seed after two hours and 32 minutes. Dismal serving plagued the first set as a total of six breaks were exchanged en route to 5-5. Hanescu secured a rare hold for 6-5, then used his fourth break of the proceedings to seize a one-set advantage. The 6'6'' Romanian earned one match point with his opponent serving at 4-5 in the second, but Odesnik saved it, held serve, and won two straight games thereafter to force a decisive frame of play.
After being absolutely hopeless on serve in set one, the 91st-ranked American put in 81 percent of his first deliveries in during the final set and did not face a single break point. As a result, one break was enough for Odesnik to earn a come-from-behind win. "After I saved the match point, I felt he got a bit tired and down on himself and I was able to raise my game," the victor explained. Next up for Odesnik is qualifier Mikhail Kukushkin, a three-set winner over Fabio Fognini.
Marcel Granollers d. (Q) Nicolas Kiefer 6-4, 1-0, retired
Despite winning two matches over the weekend to qualify for the Moscow main draw, the oft-injured Kiefer experience more physical problems on Monday against Granollers. The 32-year-old German won only three of 13 second-serve points in the first set and got broken three times. After failing to win a single point in his opening service game of the second, Kiefer called it quits due to lower back pain. Granollers advances to take on Robby Ginepri, who ousted No. 4 seed Igor Andreev in a third-set tiebreaker.
