  • Ginepri outlasts Andreev in third-set tiebreaker

Ginepri outlasts Andreev in third-set tiebreaker Robby Ginepri survives Igor Andreev in three sets on Tuesday evening in a thrilling Moscow opener. Ginepri advances to face Marcel Granollers for a spot in the quarterfinals.

Robby Ginepri upended Igor Andreev 6-3, 6-7(9), 7-6(1) in a nail-biting evening session at the Kremlin Cup on Tuesday. Ginepri needed two hours and 32 minutes to just barely get through this opening-round showdown and set up a meeting with Marcel Granollers.

Ginepri made it clear right from the start that Andreev, even with the Russian fans behind him, was not going to enjoy an easy day at the office. The unseeded American broke serve for a quick 2-0 lead in the first set, extended the advantage to 5-1, and served it out on his second try to close out the set 6-3.

Andreev looked like he might go away quietly in straight sets, but the crowd would have nothing of it. Moscow's No. 4 seed fought back from a break deficit and eventually forced a second-set tiebreaker. Although he had the upper hand throughout the decider, Andreev struggled to put Ginepri away. Andreev had set points at 6-4, 6-5, 7-6, 8-7, and 9-8 before finally taking it 11-9.

With momentum in hand, the world No. 41 raced to a 4-2 lead in the final set. This time, however, it was Andreev's turn to give back a service break. Ginepri struck to get back on level terms at 4-4, and another tiebreaker was necessary to decide things four games later. Andreev, who had taken an injury timeout at 5-6 following a hard fall, could not recover in the 'breaker. Ginepri seized an immediate mini-break for 2-0 and never looked back. After Andreev took care of his second service point for 1-2, Ginepri won the next five points in a row to finish off the match in style.

Ginepri finished with eight aces and one-double fault while winning 76 percent of his first-serve points. The world No. 92 improves to 2-0 lifetime against Andreev, having prevailed previously at the 2008 French Open. Ginepri has never faced Granollers.
